Jean Luning Trail
Description:
The
Jean Luning Trail begins about .2 miles from the Long Lake Trailhead at the
eastern end of Long Lake. It travels along the southern shore of the lake
and meets the Pawnee Pass Trail at the western end of the lake. The trail
is fairly level, ranging from 10,520 to 10,660 feet in elevation. There are
numberous wooden bridges across small streams and marshy areas. There are
very few rocks in the trail and after a rain it can be quite muddy. The total
length of the trail is about 1.35 miles. The meadow areas around the lake
are wet and fragile. Fishing for rainbow and cutthroat trout can be good near
the inlet to the lake on the west end.
This
trail lies in the Four Lakes Zone of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Only day
hiking is permitted in this travel zone. Day use is very heavy. Hiking on
this trail is easy.
