Corral Creek Trail
Description:
The Corral Creek Trail
is a short trail beginning on the Long Draw Road and ending at the junction
of the Big South and Poudre River trails. The trail begins on the other side
of a foot bridge that crosses Corral Creek. It follows an old road bed most
of the time. It parallels Corral Creek and La Poudre Pass Creek as it heads
down toward the Poudre River. You get views of the peaks to east as you travel
along the trail.
The
trail travels through large meadows and spruce/lodgepole pine forest. It enters
the Comanche Peak Wilderness about .4 miles from the trailhead. As you enter
the wilderness the trail moves away from Corral Creek and travels through
lodgepole pine and spruce forest. Here you may see deer in the early morning
hours. Farther on the trail winds through grassy meadows with scattered lodgepole
pines. Here is parallels the La Poudre Pass Creek, a much larger stream than
Corral Creek. It finally intersects the Big South and Poudre River trails
in about 1.25 miles.
This
trail is easy to hike and a good route to the south portion of the Poudre
River. According to Forest Service maps, this portion of the wilderness lies
in the Big South Travel Zone. Here camping is permitted in designated campsites
only and open fires are not allowed. However, there are no signs indicating
this or campsites that could be found. Trailhead parking will handle 10 -12
vehicles. There is little room for horse trailers when other vehicles are
present. Your best bet is to park at a wide spot along Long Draw Road.
