Corona Trail
Description:
The Corona trail can be accessed from the Devils Thumb Park trailhead on the
north and the Rollins Pass trailhead on the south. From the north the trail
intersects the High Lonesome trail at Devils Thumb Park after hiking .7 miles.
From here the trail travels through the valley, often crossing Cabin Creek
for about a mile before beginning a steep ascent to Devils Thumb Pass. The
pass is about 2.4 miles from Devils Thumb Park.
The
trail from Devils Thumb Pass to Rollins Pass (about 2.8 miles) is entirely
above timberline. It gives you the feeling of walking on top of the world.
You can see for great distances to the north and west. The trail can be quite
faint as it travels across the tundra. Rock cairns mark the way. Pay close
attention to these markers as there are several false trails made by other
hikers that will get you off the track. Sudden electrical storms can be a
hazard along this stretch. The Corona trail intersects the Devils Thumb and
the King Lake trails along its path. Just above King Lake it descends steeply
to the intersection with the King Lake Trail. From here it is an easy .4 mile
hike to the Corona Pass trailhead.
This
trail is located in the Columbine travel zone where open campfires are permitted.
Because of the fragility and weather danger of the alpine tundra, the northern
portion of the trail is better suited for camping. The trail is of moderate
difficulty and sees moderate daytime use.
