Comanche Peak Trail
Description:
The Comanche Peak
Trail begins about .6 miles north of the Mummy Pass Trail about midway along
the Mirror Lake Trail. The Comanche Peak Trail travels south from the Mirror
Lake Trail through spruce forest. It climbs from 10,680 feet to nearly 12,500
feet before leaving the park and descending to the Flowers Trail at 11,760
feet in the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest. The trail begins a moderate
climb through the forest but soon becomes strenuous as it turns north across
the tundra. Rock cairns mark the way as the trail fades in places. You get
great views as you climb above tree line. The view of Mirror Lake from above
is especially spectacular.
The trail passes to the west
of Comanche Peak (12,702'). It is a short hike to the summit from the trail
where it levels off. From this point, the trail descends across a large expanse
of tundra to intersect with the Flowers Trail. Again it is difficult to follow
in places. Look for rock cairns to help guide you.
