Chasm Lake Trail

Description:
The Chasm Lake Trail begins from the East Longs Peak Trail above Mills Moraine. It starts at an elevation of 11,514 feet and makes its way to Chasm Lake at 11,780 feet. With the exception of the last 150 yards, most of the trail is easy to hike. There is a hitch rack and toilet at the beginning of the trail. Horses are not permitted on this trail.

The trail leaves the intersection and makes a relatively level path up the Roaring Fork Gorge towards the east face of Longs Peak. It passes about 500 feet above a beautiful blue-green pool known as Peacock Pool. There are numerous wildflowers along the trail including our state flower, Columbine. Columbine Falls tumbles over slabs of granite to Peacock Pool below. The trail makes a gentle climb and crosses Roaring Fork Creek just above the falls. It travels along the south side of the stream to a Park Service patrol cabin. From here you must pick your way up a steep slope to Chasm Lake. It is a strenuous climb but not particularly difficult. Chasm Lake is a magnificent scene lying below the vertical east face of Longs Peak.

Directions:
The Chasm Lake Trail begins from the East Longs Peak Trail. The East Longs Peak Trail begins from the Longs Peak Trailhead. Take Highway 7 south from Estes Park for about 8.8 miles to the Longs Peak Area turnoff. Turn right and travel about a mile to the trailhead. The trailhead is near the ranger station and has space for about 60 to 70 vehicles. There is additional parking along the entrance road. This is a very popular area and fills quickly during the summer. Horses are permitted but there is very little room for horse trailers. Your best bet is along the right side of the road coming from the Longs Peak Campground. Hike 3.34 miles to the Chasm Lake Trail.
