Description:
Crater
Lake is a beautiful deep lake surrounded by steep rock walls. The lake is
not actually in a volcanic crater. Old-timers used to call it Hyslop Lake.
The lake contains brook trout and some small mackinaw. Camping is permitted
in designated campsites only. A permit for the Crater Lake Travel Zone is
required. Fishing pressure can be heavy as this is a popular area.

Crater
Lake is located in the Indian Peaks Wilderness and can be reached via the Pawnee
Pass Trail from the east and the Cascade Creek Trail from the west. It is about
7.7 miles to the Crater Lake Trail from the east and about 6.3 miles from the
west. From this junction it is approximately 1.2 miles to the lake. The Pawnee
Pass Trail is the more difficult trail. Take Highway 34 north from Granby to
the entrance of the Arapaho National Recreation Area. Travel east on Forest
Road 125 for about 10 miles to the Monarch Lake Trailhead and the Cascade Creek
Trail.
