Red Deer Lake
Description:
This
picturesque lake lies on a bench to the northeast of Buchanan Pass in the
Indian Peaks Wilderness. The west and southwest shore of the lake backs up
to steep rocky slopes. About two thirds of the shoreline is accessible for
fishing. The lake contains brook and brown trout. Camping is allowed with
a Middle St Vrain Travel Zone permit but campfires are not permitted.

Red
Deer Lake can be reached via the Buchanan Pass and Red Deer Cutoff trails. From
the Middle St Vrain Trailhead take the Buchanan Pass Trail to the Red Deer Cutoff
(6.3 miles). From the Coney Flats Trailhead take the Beaver Creek Trail 1.6
miles to the Buchanan Pass Trail. Turn north on the Buchanan Pass Trail for
.8 miles to the Red Deer Cutoff Trail. Red Deer Lake is about .6 miles west
from there.
To
reach the Middle St Vrain Trailhead take Highway 7 west from Lyons approximately
12 miles or Highway 7 south from Estes Park about 18 miles to Highway 72. Turn
south on 72 and travel approximately five miles to the Peaceful Valley Campground.
Turn west through the campground and on to Camp Dick Campground (about a mile).
The trailhead is located at the west end of the Camp Dick Campground.
To
reach the Coney Flats Trailhead take Highway 7 west from Lyons approximately
12 miles or Highway 7 south from Estes Park about 18 miles to Highway 72. Turn
south on 72 and travel approximately seven miles to County Road 96. Take County
Road 96 west for about 2.5 miles to Beaver Reservoir. Hike or drive the rough
4WD road about four miles to the Coney Flats Trailhead
